The Deen Dayal Upadhyaya Grameen Kaushalya Yojana (DDU-GKY) is a flagship program launched by the Ministry of Rural Development (MoRD), Government of India on 25th September 2014. It is part of the National Rural Livelihood Mission (NRLM) and aims to provide employment-oriented skill training to rural youth, particularly those aged between 15 and 35 years from economically disadvantaged backgrounds. Named after Deen Dayal Upadhyaya, the scheme is designed to empower rural youth by equipping them with industry-relevant skills and linking them to salaried jobs. DDU-GKY emphasizes inclusivity by giving priority to marginalized groups such as Scheduled Castes (SC), Scheduled Tribes (ST), minorities, and women. The program offers free residential and non-residential training, along with placement support, soft skills development, and post-placement assistance. It mandates that at least 70% of those trained must be placed in jobs, ensuring a results-oriented approach. Funded through a cost-sharing model between the central and state governments, the scheme is implemented by Project Implementing Agencies (PIAs) and monitored by State Rural Livelihood Missions (SRLMs). Overall, DDU-GKY plays a crucial role in enhancing the employability of rural youth and promoting inclusive economic growth across India.
